与地球同步卫星相比，距离地球只有780公里的铱星低轨道网络意味着太多的优势：北极至南极的完整覆盖、更短的传输路径、更强的信号、更低的延迟和更短的注册时间。在太空中，每颗铱星都与多达四颗其他卫星通过无线相连，以此形成一个动态太空网络，使得通信载荷在卫星之间接力传递，确保了通信全球完整覆盖。特别是在没有本地网络的区域更彰显铱星网络的强大优势。
铱星Certus®是铱公司于2019年1月推出的新业务平台，首次为海上和陆地移动行业提供宽带服务。该服务可以根据终端用户的需要灵活地调整设备速度、大小和功率要求。通过与全球顶级的硬件厂商配合，目前铱星公司推出了Certus®多种行业带宽业务，包括704bps，352kbps，176bps，以及88k/22kbps速率的带宽产品。借助二代星座强大能力，铱星Certus服务已不仅仅是一个连接解决方案，更为合作伙伴提供了一个只凭铱星交联的L波段网络即可拓展整合其专用的高速，中速以及低速数据应用的平台。

Iridium completed a constellation upgrade in early 2019, replacing all its satellites and upgrading the supporting ground infrastructure. By partnering with the world-lead hardware vendors, Iridium now offers Certus® broadband services with a variety of bandwidth for the industries, like 704kbps, 352kbps, 176kbps, and 88k,22kbps. This enabled the launch of Iridium Certus®, a new multi-service platform delivering specialty broadband services, with additional midband services coming soon.
